You know what I think ? I think you ‘re
covering up for Smith ‛s fraud. Your
reputation must be pretty muddy.

That ‘s what others had said about me, so I decided to do something about it ! I called on 19 of the most influential
and prominent men of the
state, none of whom belonged to the Church. I asked them to testify regarding my integrity.

We will all testify for you, David
Whitmer. We all agree wholeheartedly
that you are completely honest and
above reproach !*

  Thank you, gentlemen.

*Their testimony, Printed in the Richmond (Mo.) Conservator, March 24, 1881, reads as follows :
“ We, the undersigned citizens of Richmond, Raymond County, Mo., where David Whitmer has resided since the year A.D. 1838, certify that we have long and intimately [ been ] acquainted with him and know him to be a man of the highest integrity, and of undoubted truth and veracity. ”
Given at Richmond, Mo., this March 19, A.D. 1881.
