How did you get involved with Smith,
Mr. Harris ?

I was closely acquainted with the Smith
family as they lived near my farm. Many times I hired Joseph Smith, Sr., Hyrum, and Joseph, Jr. to work on my land. Joseph, Jr. was the best hand I had ever employed.1

I owned about 320 acres of land and four homes in Palmyra. As a veteran of the war of 1812, I was well respected. I participated
in the leadership of the community
and often contributed to worthy causes.

  There goes Mr. Martin Harris,
one of Palmyra ‛s finest !

Why did a wealthy, well respected man like yourself
get mixed up in Smith ‛s
religious nonsense ?
