There was no nonsense. I investigated
many churches previously, but in 1818 I was inspired of the Lord and taught that I should not join any church ; for none of them had true authority from God.

In 1824, I learned from Joseph Smith, Sr. about Joseph, Jr. ‛s vision in the woods and his visit from the Angel Moroni. I felt impressed that they were telling the Truth.

I soon decided to help Joseph in his work. After Joseph received the Plates in 1827, persecution became so intense that I gave Joseph $50.00 so that he could move to a safer location in Harmony, Pennsylvania. 1

It is reported that numerous times you had difficulty believing Smith ‛s story of the Golden Plates. You even took a copy of some of Joseph Smith ‛s characters for the scientists to verify. Isn ‛t it true that you were looking
for more proof before you wasted any more money on Smith ?

Quite the contrary, I didn ‛t need any additional proof. The Lord had instructed me to go to New York City with some of the characters and show
them to experts to fulfill a prophecy in Isaiah 29:10-14. 2
