So in February of 1828, I
first went to Dr. Samuel
Latham Mitchell of Rutgers
University, referred to
by his colleagues as the “
Magnus Apollo ” of the day.
He was impressed by what I
showed him.1

He referred me to Charles Anthon, LLD, a professor
of ancient languages at Columbia College.

  While I may not be
of much help to you Mr.
Harris, I know someone
who certainly might.

Charles Anthon? Never heard of him.

  He was an ambitious young
linguist who would later
become one of the greatest
classical scholars in the United States. We made an appointment to meet at his home.

Martin supposedly had an amzing memory and could quote
almost any text from the Bible verbatim ; that must be why he can
remember so many details and specific conversations.2
