Nephi described the language
he used to write the plates :

Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the
learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians. — Nephi 1:2

The Hebrew written characters would have been too cumbersome to write onto the small format of metal plates, so the Nephite Prophets had to devise a more abbreviated language to use. They were very concerned about saving space on the plates. *

I had better save
as much space as possible
for future record
keepers.

1000 years after Nephi began the record, the Prophet Mormon stated we were writing “ in the characters which are called among us [ the ] Reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us according to our manner of speech.” ( Mormon 9:32 )
