Ezekiel may have taken two
sticks and written on them as he was requested, but this would have been symbolic of the gathering of Israel and the two records, but not the fulfillment itself. The Lord told him that when the people asked Ezekiel
what the sticks meant he was to say:

Ezekiel 37: 18-20

Thus saith the Lord God; Behold I [the Lord] will take the Stick of Joseph [record of Joseph’s descendants], which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows [notice the descendants are referred to separately from the stick] , and [I the Lord] will put them with him, even the stick of Judah [record of the descendants of Judah], and make them one stick [symbolic of gathering both the records and the people], and they shall be one in Mine [the Lord’s] hand.

My own writings reaffirm that the Lord will gather both His people, and His Word.

2nd Nephi 29:14

And it shall come to pass that My people,
which are of the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their possessions ; and My Word also shall be gathered in one . . . .

The early church Fathers ( A.D. 300-400 ), including Jerome ( or Eusebius ),
understood that this passage referred to two separate books of Scripture. 1
