FINAL TESTIMONIES

  The Prophet Joseph Smith

“[ It was a fact that I had beheld a vision. ] I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light, I saw two personages, and they did in reality speak to me ; And though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true. ” 1

As Joseph went to Carthage, of his own free will, he stated, “ I am going like a lamb to the slaughter ; but I am calm as a summer’s morning ; I have a conscience void of offense towards God, and towards all men. I SHALL DIE INNOCENT, AND IT SHALL YET BE SAID OF ME – HE WAS MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD ! ’ ” 2

( June 27, 1844 ) Joseph was shot and killed at age 38 at Carthage Jail in Illinois by a painted
mob of 200 men.

In D&C 136:37-40 the Lord said this about the Prophet Joseph Smith: “ Therefore, . . . ye shall
behold it [ My Glory ] if ye are faithful in keeping all My Words that I have given you, . . . from Jesus and His Apostles to Joseph Smith, whom I [ God] did call upon by Mine Angels [ Moroni, etc.], . . . and by Mine own Voice out of the Heavens, to bring forth My work : Which foundation he [ Joseph Smith ] did lay, and was faithful ; and I took him to Myself. Many have marveled because of his death ; but it was needful that he should seal his testimony with his blood, that he might be honored and the wicked might be condemned . . . I [ God ] have left a Witness of My name.”
