In 2004, “ 546,000 days of labor ” were donated to the Church Welfare facilities
consisting of 18 Processing and Distribution facilities, 59 Production centers, 105
Canneries, 128 Storehouses, and 48 Deseret Industries Thrift Stores.

546,000 ? Let ‛s see, that calculates into
13,650 forty hour work weeks, or 2621⁄2 years of work. They ‛ve even got me beat.

  2) Fast Offerings started in 1830 - whereby once
a month members donate the savings of omitting
two meals that are used to provide temporary help
for others with the necessities of life.

Two meals, times my wife and I,
plus our two teenagers . . .

Conservatively estimated, “ 1 to 5 million dollars are
donated each month to help needy families
.” Many
millions have and do benefit from this program.

Let ‛s get out of here, guys. We
know where we ‛re not wanted.

I think that when we are affluent . . . that we
ought to be very, very generous . . . and give, instead of the amount we
saved by two meals of fasting, perhaps much, much more—ten times more where we
are in a position to do it. ( Spencer W. Kimball, Conference Report, April 1974, p. 184 )

* In many wards throughout the Church, 12 and 13 year old priesthood holders ( who hold the office of Deacon )
volunteer their time once a month to collect fast offerings in person.
