In 1842, Sarah G. Kimball gathered a group of women in her home to repair clothing for the builders of the Nauvoo, Illinois temple. Soon after, Joseph Smith endorsed the group as an official organization within the Church and renamed it the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo.

  From these humble beginnings, there are now approximately 5.1 million members of the Relief Society in 170 countries. It is recognized as the oldest women ‛s service organization in the world.
